Cool Hand Luke Journal 1

The following post is for FRESHMEN only.

In your journals, thoughtfully and thoroughly respond to the following prompt:

Luke says, “Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand.”
What does he mean by this statement?

Use evidence from the film to illustrate your response. Do you agree with Luke? Can ‘nothing’ be a ‘real cool hand’? Give one solid external example (from film, literature, politics, etc.) to support your response.

  1. I believe that when Luke says this, he means that it would be better to leave a situation empty handed rather than leave with something bad. When Luke says this, he says it in a tone that shows that he has been in the same position before as he had been during the poker game. I feel like its the opposite, in context to the saying "It's better to have loved and lost, than never loved at all," just like in A Raisin in the Sun. When Walter lost all the money he invested in the liquor store, he realized that it was a bad move. Not only did he lose the trust of his family, he drained all their money causing more and more problems to branch off of each other. So would it have been to have for him to want more for his family not worrying about consequences, or to just have left "well enough" alone? I guess that is up for you to decide at the end of the day.
