After "beating" Dragline in the fight (and by "beating" we mean "getting pounded on until the other guy gives up"), and after "winning" the poker game (and by "winning" we mean "playing with an inferior hand until the other guy gives up"), Luke claims that "Sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand."
In the comments bellow, give an example from another film, a book, a short story, etc. that proves Luke is right, that proves that sometimes "nothin' can be a real cool hand."
in UP russel would always yell out squirrel when the dogs were near and the dogs would look and would see no squirrel. this shows that "nothin' can be a real cool hand." because he was lying about the squirrel to destract the dogs from what they are doing.
ReplyDeleteOkay so this is a stretch... In the book Flowers for Algernon Charlie is mentally handicap and works as a delivery boy in a bakery. The reason this connects is because before he had the surger to make him intelligent he was blissfully ignorant to the fact that his coworkers were mocking him. When he gets the surgery he realizes this and it sucks. So having nothing (no intelligence) was actually more satisfying than knowting the truth... so it was a cool hand... In a messed up way.
ReplyDeleteThis is like Rocky Balboa being famous for never giving up because in reality he is really a terrible boxer. Even though he has a empty hand in boxing and never won he is famous for being a loser. In this idea of "Sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand" Rocky had an empty hand by never winning but he has a cool hand by becoming famous for never giving up.
ReplyDeleteIn the movie Gran Torino with Clint Eastwood an Asian gang is giving Clint a hard time in his neighborhood, so he decides to try to scare the boys. After enrolling in the Korean War, the boys know he is capable of doing just about anything. One night Clint goes to the gangbanger's house and pretends to pull a gun out of his pocket, but only pulls his finger out in a shooting motion and causes the boys to all jump and be freaked out. This showed that sometimes "nothin' can be a cool hand" because he did not actually have a gun on him, but he gave the boys a good scare and he could not have gotten in trouble for it.
ReplyDeleteWell, the quote "nothin' can be a real cool hand" is talking about bluffing. In the movie Broadcast News (from 1987) one clip shows the new cast reporter being caught faking tears for a story he was about to report. This connects to the quote because William Hurt (the news reporter) bluffed to make the news report he was about to tell that much more emotional.
ReplyDeleteIn the Movie Chronicle, the main character Andrew was always teased, and beaten by his father and his classmates for being weird and recording his whole life on a video camera. He wasn't well known at all in his school. It came to one day that Andrew was exploring and walked into this deep cave/ ditch, and had retrieved some very cool superpowers that would help him protect himself, and become well known in his school. This storyline of the movie "Chronicle" can relate to Luke's observation of "of nothing becoming a cool hand" because the main character of the movie Chronicle started without being well known, but has developed some sort of power so that people would notice him more. This shows how a character can start off with nothing, and suddenly discover a hidden talent or power.
ReplyDeleteIn the book Ender's Game the main character Ender is just a useless Third child that was only allowed to live because the government wanted to experiment on him. In a sense he had nothing; he had no friends and no life to look forward to. Then he is sent into space and discovers many friends and his intelligence grows exponentially. He then saves the entire world from aliens and proves that "nothin' can be a real cool hand".
ReplyDeleteIn the movie Fun with Dick and Jane, Dick uses a series of events to rob a bank. He first has his wife fake a heart attack to make a distraction then he steals a card from one of the bank members backs. He then proceeds to get in the bank. This shows that "nothin' can be a real cool hand," because they would have never been able to pull off the robbery unless they had made a fake distraction first.
ReplyDeleteIn an episode of Spongebob Squarepants, there is a new fish that goes to Spongebob's boating school, his name is Flats. Well, Flats wants to beat the crap out of Spongebob for no apparent reason. Spongebob is really nervous but then he goes to fight Flats one day. Being a sponge, Spongebob doesn't feel any of the punches that Flats throws at him. His fist is absorbed into Spongebob's body and then his body bounces back after the fist is withdrawn. Flats continues to punch Spongebob day in and day out until gets tired and passes out. Spongebob's soft and squishy body is a good example of how "nothin' can be a real cool hand."
ReplyDeleteIn the movie Inseption the people are in dreams so they can still expierience cool things as if they are real life but have an egde because if they get shot they dont die. This is awesome because it shows why "nothin' can be a real cool hand".Sometimes all you need is that slight edge.
ReplyDeleteIn the book, The Outsiders, the Socs were the rich popular kids and then there were the Greasers who were like a gang. In this book the Socs were overulling the Greasers, they put them down beacuse they were lower class. By the end of this book the Greasers presevered and had each others backs. The Greasers stood up for themselves and prevailed over the Socs. This is just like what happens in the movie.
ReplyDeleteIn the book "The Hunger Games," District 12 is opressed by the higher class in other districts. The other districts were more powerful and games were set up to establish a winner among all districts. The main character and her district perservere in the long run and defeat their opressors, the capitol, to justice. They fought for what they believed in and never gave up, similar to the quote, "nothin' can be a real cool hand."
ReplyDeleteThe expression "nothin' can be a real cool hand" referrs to someone bluffing about what they have to get information out of another person. To see if they have the guts to believe them, and see if they're curious enough to go all in. For example; in my favorite TV show pretty little liars. The four main characters that are girls, and are best friends, are being harrassed by this anonymous person, who goes by "A". And they seems to know everything about them. And one day when they want to find out who it is, they set up the person by convincing them they have a secery about them and they will reveal it to the police if they do not meet them at a certain location and a certain time. That night the show up to the destination with an empty. Pretending like theres something very valuable in it. The stalker shows up dressed in all black masking their face. They have called the police ahead of time and told the police they were endanger so they could come arrest their stalker. They say if you show your face, well open the box. Thus, the person does so. And they find out who it is, then open the box to show the stalker that nothing is there. They try to escape, and succeed. So in the end, they find out who the person is, but they also put themselves in a risky position because now their stalker is threatening to tell the entire world their secerts. Thus, in the endit was a bitter sweet situation. Which is also another way for saying "Sometimes nuthin' can be a real cool hand".
ReplyDeleteNothin is a real cool hand simply means out smarting your enemy by bluffing. For example in the show "Vampire Diaries" the main characters Elena, Damon, Stefan try to over come a common enemy, Klaus. With many different tactics, each sides try to out smart each other hoping the other will crack. In the episode when they attempt to kill Klaus, they try to lure him in by telling them they have a powerful weapon and that they are willing to strike a bargain. However they have no weapon but by bluffing they hope he will believe them and fall into their trap. Occurrences such as this happen many times in this show. Therefor "Nothin can be a real cool hand" helps the characters triumph over Klaus.
ReplyDeleteThe quote "Sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand” refers to bluffing but also, at a lower scale, not giving up until the end, of whatever that maybe. A real life occurrence that I consider a modern example of this quote takes place inside a boxing ring, similarly to the short story we read, Battle Royal. The event my father and I watched together on a polish channel on T.V. The match was against Polish, Andrew Golota and Ukrainian, Vitali Klistschko. Although the boxing match brutal and as I imagine, painful Andrew Golota kept fighting to the best of his abilities. Although, Klistschko had many advantages, Golota after falling and simply failing kept coming back to his feet, not once deciding to stop trying. To conclude, this occurrence, I consider a great example and interpretation of the quote "Sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.”
ReplyDeleteLuke’s quote justifies the importance of achieving anything with nothing. The quote basically means having nothing can be quite an advantage in some situations. For example, at the fight scene Luke had nothing, did nothing, and was punched out many times. He had nothing to lose, nothing to give up in, and nothing to look back in. Having nothing gave him an advantage that finally won him the fight. In the anime series “Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood” two children were “alchemist”; they can transmute any kind of materials equally. Although having a mere perfect life the father left (also a state alchemist) and never came back. The mother finally became ill and died. Having no other relatives to take care of them; the two brothers performed the ultimate taboo; trying to transmute their mother back. The transmutation ended in a horrible accident. The older brother (Edward Elric) lost his right arm and left leg, but the younger brother (Alfonse Elric) lost his entire body. Edward tried to save his brother by binding his soul in a suit of armor. The two brothers swore to themselves to find their own body. With nothing else to lose and nothing else left for them; they received the mentality of not fearing to lose and to give everything they had. The brothers set out in a journey to find the Philosopher’s Stone with confidence.
ReplyDeleteIn the movie Miracle the U.S 1980 hockey team was the underdog in every game. On the other hand the Soviets were considered to be the best team in the world. The U.S team was considered to be nothing to every team, but the U.S team showed the other countrys that they had what it took to b e champions and in every game the Americans proved their skill and eventually beat the Soviets in the seminfinals to advance to the championship. This shows that "nothin' can be a real cool hand," because they were nothing at the beging of th olympics and were really the bes team in the world.
