Story Time

This post is for FRESHMEN only.

We've been talking about it for a while now...Stories told by an adult through the eyes of a child. Stories where the TONE (the narrator's attitude) and the MOOD (the audience's attitude) is DIFFERENT.

That night at the jailhouse? Scout is OBLIVIOUS of the danger. The TONE is SWEET and INNOCENT, but the mood is one of NAIL BITING TENSION.

So here's your task: Write a STORY about an event in your LIFE. You know, something that happened to you when you were YOUNG. Here's the catch: you must tell the story through your eyes when you were a CHILD. In other words, the TONE and the MOOD must be DIFFERENT. Here's a hint: you might want to write about a silly time but make it sound scary, or you might want to recall a very dramatic moment but make it sound like an average, everyday occurrence.

All material must be appropriate for class. Your story must contain DIALOGUE (characters talking), DESCRIPTION (how people, places and events look, sound, smell, etc.), and ACTION (characters doing things). Think about how this works in To Kill a Mockingbird and A Christmas Story.

  1. Halloween night is tonight and I am not looking forward to it. The reason why is because there is this one really scary house where people in masks are always at. There seems to be a really nice lady that always say “come on we promise we won’t scare you” but every year I don’t believe because she is one of them. This year I decided that today I am going in the house. We just left our house and are walking towards the scary house I am starting to panic a little. My steps get shorter and slower the closer I am getting to the house. I see the first man in the mask and now I know I must finish what I have started. I get through the first gate with little worry but it feels like the distance from where I am and where the house is at least 100 yards. I finally make it to the door where they give out candy and I see one last guy pop out at the kid in front of me and think “thank God that was not me”. I got my candy and I feel so proud of myself that I finally conquered the house after what felt like a life time. Now I plan on enjoying Halloween because I no longer have to think about the scary house.

We finally made it. After climbing a flight of stairs as high as Mount Everest. “Do I have to go down?” I cried, “What if it cracks?”
“Stop being a baby. Nothing is going to happen” my cousin replied as he rolled his eyes.
“Are you sure? These look pretty old!” I said with sheer fright.
As the line slowly moved forward, inch by inch, I started to sweat more and more. My heart was throbbing from the fear of it breaking. We walked up another flight of stairs, each step making a cracking sound as if it would give way after one more person steps on it.
“I’m not so sure about this anymore” I said.
“It is fun. You will see that it was worth it once it’s over” he replied with his voice as strong as it has been all day.
“Ok. I guess I will” already regretting what I had just said.
I really started to get real scared once we reached the top. Looking over the edge look as if I was sky diving, thousands of feet in the air. All the people in the wave pool, lazy river, and baby section looked like ants. I could barely make out my family all standing at the bottom with a camera waiting.
“Were next up” my cousin said booming with joy.
“Are you sure you want to? We can go down if you want to” I said with my last attempt to get out of it.
“We have been waiting for an hour. Were not leaving now” the last thing I wanted to hear.
It was finally our turn. We put the giant air tube down, and my cousin got in the back and I sat in the spot in front of him.
    “Here we go!” he exclaimed.
“Yeah, here we go” I replied in a sarcastic voice.
The lifeguard peered over the ledge, saw that the people before us were done and out of harms way, and then gave us a soft push. We slowly moved towards the drop. It seemed like eternity. Then we hit it.
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!” was the only thing that I could scream.
We went down it in almost thirty seconds time.
“That was AWESOME!” with a grin like a banana across my face.
“I told you it was worth it my cousin said also with a giant grin

  3. I walked the street i lived on with my best friend Jessica. We had been exploring my neighborhood all day long. We had found a pond, a hidden lake, and a willow tree that we could successfully swing on. We had thought our adventure had come to an end but then a lightbulb went off in my head,
"Jessica, lets ding dong ditch!", I screamed with delight.
As soon as those words came out of my mouth, i saw Jessicas mouth turn into a gigantic grin,
    "Yes!" she yelled.
We walked on the street and looked at the array of houses, deciding on which one would be our host. Once we found the house we were going to ding dong ditch, we crept up to the door along the bushes and bickered for a moment or two.
    "Jessica you ring the doorbell!"
"No you Michelle, it was your idea in the first place!"
    "Nu-uh!"
    "Uh-u"
    "Not it"
    "I dare you, you're it!"
As soon as Jessica muttered those words, I knew she meant business. This was no joking matter, we could get put in jail for this kind of trespassing.
"Oh yeah? well I double dog dare you"
"Well I Triple. Dog. Dare. You."
I couldn't back down from a triple dog dare, so I agreed.
"Jessica, what if they find my fingerprints? I could get put in jail!"
"Put your sleeve over your finger, they will never find us"
As I inched closer to the door, I slowly reached my finger up to the doorbell, counted to three, and pressed the doorbell. As the loud chime of the doorbell rang out, I ran back home as hard as my little legs could carry me. With Jessica not far behind, we ran up to my house, through the door, up the stairs and to my room.
"That was the best, and scariest adventure ever! What if the cops come looking for us?" Jessica exclaimed.
"Well then we'll have to hide hide out from them, but for now, lets go eat dinner!"
