Exit through the Gift Shop and The Great Gatsby

This post is for JUNIORS only.

First we read The Great Gatsby, and we examined how James Gats re-invented himself and became Jay Gatsby. We examined the price he paid, the flaws in the illusion, and the reasons he wanted to make the change in the first place.

Second we watched Exit through the Gift Shop, and we examined how Thierry went from thrift store owner, to film maker (?), and finally to artist (!). We saw similarities between him and Gatsby - the price he paid and the flaws in the illusion.

We also noticed how in both cases, people were suckered into believing the illusion before them. In both cases, people were tricked into thinking that what they were seeing (a rich, popular playboy or a new-wave artist) were 100% real.

Here is your task for today -- in a thoughtful, thorough paragraph, and using specific evidence from both the novel and the film, answer the following question:

Who was more successful at re-inventing himself, Gatsby or Thierry?

Post your response in the comments section bellow. When you have finished, check in with the instructor to make sure it posted. If you have any questions, please ask.

  1. In the question of who was more successful in re-inventing himself, I’d have to say Thierry was the most successful, hands down. The fact that James Gatz went through great lengths to try to become different and impress a girl, is less inventive as it is pitiful. Gatsby was more concerned about how to get Daisy than he was about his actual illusion of how others thought of him. He never really invited or showed himself at his own house parties, which gives a person great belief that he never really cared. Gatsby even goes as far to say that he had waited five years for a girl like her, which deduces this illusion and this act was all a ploy to bring Daisy in. Thierry on the other hand, was not filming Banksy or anyone else to try and re-invent himself. He was there to try to find himself, in a sense. Only when did opportunity present itself that he could actually be an artist, did he actually try to re-invent himself. So in a basic way, Thierry is a big opportunist he dreamt big and had the help of others. Gatsby, on the other hand, was too focused on one goal to hide the facts that he was nothing more than a common man.

  2. I believe Thierry was more successful at re-inviting himself because he had started from the bottom and worked his way up. Although the same thing happend with Gatsby Thierry was more sucessful because he tried really hard to stay at the top by going out of his way to meet famous people that would help him be more sucessful. This is why I believe Thierry was more successful at ree-inventing himself.

  3. Thierry was more successful at re-inventing himself than Gatsby was. Gatsby had the money and fame but he what he really wanted was Daisy. Gatsby wasn’t successful because he didn’t get Daisy. Thierry was successful because he wanted to transform himself into an artist. He had very little time and started out with a bang. He made millions of dollars on art. He got what he really wanted and that’s why he was more successful than Gatsby was

  4. I think Thierry was more successful in reinventing himself for many reasons. First of all, Gatsby reinvented himself to get the girl of his dreams, and to do that he had to change his image and be successful and rich. Gatsby succeeded in becoming rich and successful but didn’t get the girl he wanted, also ended up dying because of the girl of his dreams. Thierry on the other hand, at first was an owner of a store, but wanted to become a filmmaker. He ended up being successful by filming all of the street artists and ended up using his footage in a movie. Thierry then was told to start doing street art while Banksy was putting the movie together. Thierry then had fallen in love with street art and wanted to become a new-wave artist. Thierry then wanted to be like Banksy and all of the other successful artists, so he decided to have an exhibit. His exhibit was very successful and he ended up being very famous. He was successful by being an unknown artist and then over night being a huge success making over 1 million dollars.

  5. I believe Thierry was more successful at re-inviting himself because he had started from the bottom and worked his way up. Although the same thing happend with Gatsby Thierry was more sucessful because he tried really hard to stay at the top by going out of his way to meet famous people that would help him be more sucessful. Gatsby on the other hand participated in illegal activies to become rich and and didnt do anything further to purse his life after he became rich. Thierry on the other hand did everything he could to get where he got and didnt stop like Gatsby when he reached the top Thierry went further. This is why Thierry was more successful then Gatsby at re-inventing himself.

  6. I believe Thierry was more successful in re-inventing himself. A lot of people did view Gatsby as “a rich, popular playboy” but it didn’t last for too long. Gatsby re-invented himself in a way that didn’t take him too far. All Gatsby wanted was to get Daisy. He re-invented himself for Daisy, but in the end he failed. He didn’t end up getting Daisy. He didn’t become famous and not many people looked up to Gatsby. Most people knew Gatsby or liked Gatsby because of his parties. Nobody really knew who Gatsby was. Thierry on the other hand started as a nobody and re-invented himself to be famous. His goal was to make people believe he was an artist. He didn’t only make a few people believe he was an artist; he made people all over believe that he was an artist. He took a risk and prepared an art show within 3 weeks. 3 weeks is it all it took for Thierry to become famous. People were so convinced that Thierry was a real artist. He made a million dollars because of his success. The only people that knew Thierry was not a real artist were people that actually knew Thierry. Overall he was very successful!

  7. When it comes to who was best at re-inventing themselves it would be Thierry. Thierry started out as a nobody and ended as a famous “artist” in just a short period of time. In the Novel The Great Gatsby, Gatsby went from a loner, to a gangster, and to a dead man. Throughout the story Gatsby’s goal was to live the American Dream with Daisy. Gatsby would never be able to reach this goal because of the lack of love from Daisy and his alleged criminal affiliations: and because he dies. In the movie Exit Through the Gift Shop Thierry starts out as a nobody filming other people doing their own art to end up becoming famous from other peoples art. He in the end thought he himself was a real artist not being smart enough to know better and ended being happy with himself because of that. In the end Thierry come out on top in re-inventing himself because he didn’t die, he got what he wished for, and was happy while Gatsby died miserably.

  8. I believe that Thierry was more successful at re-inventing than Gatsby was because Thierry was nothing. All Thierry was is a film maker, but that changed when he started filming street art. He had people believing that he was a film maker and an artist but he really did surprise people at the end because he did end up with fame and fortune unlike Gatsby. All that Gatsby wanted was Daisy. He had fame and fortune but in the end he ended up with nothing. He was dead and everything he has worked for (that was for Daisy) faded. Daisy didn't even want him in the end. This is why I think that Thierry was more successful in re-inventing himself than Gatsby was.

  9. I think Thiery was more successful than Gatsyby at reinventing themselves. Gatsby only changed his image to impress Daisy. He did reinvent himself but only did it for someone else. Theiry changed his image twice and made people believe he was serious at both of them. Everyone thought his filmmaking was a success because he was so passionate about it, but turned out that Theiry was just crazy when it came to cameras. He also reinvented himself by making people believe he was a really good artist. He actually brainwashed people to think he was someone he wasn’t. Gatsby changed his image for only Daisy to notice and for his town to see, while Theiry changed for himself and asked people to help him spread the word about “Mr. Brainwash”, he went all out to change his image.

  10. Thierry was more successful in re-inventing himself than Gatsby. Thierry showed that he could re-invent himself into most anything he wanted to; he went from being a thrift store owner and in the end being an artist, which are completely different from each other. Gatsby was also able to re-invent himself too but his change was a change that other people can also do as well (going from rags to riches). Gatsby also only tried to re-invent himself only because he wanted to impress Daisy not because he was doing it for himself. Thierry on the other hand was able to prove that he could change and have everyone believe in what he had become. Thierry was able to fool everyone and have them believe that he was an artist, even though he did not make any of his art, and he was able to make a large profit from it as well. Thierry shows that he was more successful at re0inventing himself than Gatsby was.

  11. Thierry set out to find Banksy, the mysterious man of street art. Finding Banksy was also successful. Banksy showed him how to be a good artist while Banksy switched to making Thierry’s movie. Both Gatsby and Thierry had a person influence them to be successful. Gatsby’s was Dan Cody and Thierry’s was Banksy. Thierry got what he really wanted and that’s why he was more successful than Gatsby was.

  12. I think Gatsby was more successful without a doubt. He was an ordinary boy who had nothing besides jobless parents. He ran away from home because he wanted to become something. Even though the reason was a girl he still made something impossible possible. He worked hard and in five years, he was one the richest men in New York. Many people would say he did this for a girl of his dreams, but that is arguable because from what his father said, he had notes written down and it was his childhood dream to become something big. Gatsby tried really hard to be on top and become famous, and when he did he used his money to find his long lost love again. This is why Gatsby is more successful than Thierry.

  13. Thierry was more successful than Gatsby at re-inventing himself. James Gats re-invented himself and became Gatsby but things did not really workout. He wanted to be with Daisy but Daisy was with Tom. He was not successful with things that he wanted to get. Also, at the end, he ended up getting killed by Wilson. However, Thierry was really successful. Although he was a filmmaker in the beginning, he got what he wanted at the end. He wanted to be a real artist so he started to film Banksy. He started to feel like he needs his own art and Banksy also told him to stop filming him and go make some arts. Thierry brought good artists from all over the place and they started to prepare for the art show. In a short period of time, they finished preparing for that art show and Thierry made millions of dollars on arts. From this, it says that Thierry was more successful. Thierry got what he really wanted but Gatsby didn’t.

  14. Who did a better job at re-inventing himself? Well, Thierry did do a good job re-inventing himself but all he really did was take celebrities and give them a gun or a make-up job. He even hires people to do the work for him and his art is nothing special. A monster made out of TV isn’t really impressive, three soup cans that have different color isn’t new, and I can go on forever. The point I’m trying to say is that Thierry did the same thing that everyone else did but in a different way. Gatsby is a different story, he had to change his identity, his life and had to work hard to get where he is. Even in the bootlegging business, he had to work hard to avoid the cops or other gangs. But Thierry did kind of bring art to a whole other level by making his art tell a message. But if I had to choose, I would pick Gatsby cause again, he had to do lot things to get where he is.

  15. Thierry was more successful at re-inventing himself because he went through different jobs to get to where he wanted to be. Unlike Gatsby, Thierry didn’t lie about his life. He didn’t smuggle alcohol, Gatsby did. Thierry was inspired to mirror those artists to do his own graffiti. Like the mysterious Bansky, Thierry did his own art gallery in Los Angeles. Only, he didn’t do the work himself. Thierry had help in creating his image. Gatsby may have the money but he knew it wasn’t going to last long. He was trying so hard to impress Daisy who didn’t even love him in the first place.

  16. I believe Thierry was more successful than Jay Gatsby at re-inventing himself. Gatsby had to make up lies to make his new image work. He had to make up the story about inheriting his money and his past life. When Gatsby was talking to nick about how it took him 5 years to earn enough money to buy his house Nick got confused and called him out about his inherits. Jay Gatsby made a lot more money than Thierry but Gatsby didn’t turn himself into anything amazing he was only an average man with a ton of money. Thierry turned himself into a worldwide artist from being a storeowner. Thierry might have been a little crazy but he re-invented himself into something that people around the world appreciate.

  17. In the book "The Great Gatsby" and in the movie, Exit through the Gift Shop, both Jay Gatsby and Thierry re-invent themselves. The one that was more successful though in my eyes, is Thierry. Gatsby had to become a whole different person, while Thierry just grew into the person he became. Thierry began as a thrift store owner who then became a film maker, who eventually became an “artist.” Thierry managed to tell people he was an ”artist” and thousands of people believed him. Thierry painted, pasted, and even spray-painted things onto walls which made him famous. Some things weren’t even his own but he still became a famous, great artist in peoples eyes. Thierry didn’t have to do any illegal crime in order to make money like Gatsby. Thierry just let time pick its journey as he made it in the big city of Hollywood. Thierry told people he was a film maker, and then ended up telling people that he was an “artist”, where he eventually made millions. That’s why I think Thierry was more successful than Jay Gatsby, since he didn’t have to hurt any people or do some illegal activity.

  18. Between Gatsby and Thierry, Thierry was more successful at re-inventing himself to the public. I believe this because Gatsby was able to fool the small towns of east and west egg. Thierry on the other hand was able to fool all of los Angles and make people actually buy his art. Thierry not only re-invented himself, but he invented his art as well, and fooled everybody with both. Another big reason Thierry did a better job re-inventing himself is that he still continues to fool the world and is actually making a life out of his art. Gatsby was once believed to be rich, and popular. But now everybody finally figured out his story, and he is no longer mysterious and misunderstood, people found out who he was. Overall Thierry’s story was more believable and he re-invented himself better than Gatsby.

  19. Thierry was more successful than Gatsby at reinventing himself. Thierry made himself famous in the art world without taking the proper steps. He just went straight to the top by presenting a huge art show. Gatsby on the other hand had to build up his reputation and businesses as a child. Thierry was also able to make his money in an honest way, something that Gatsby couldn’t have done. Both Jay and Thierry chose to change their names for the sake of their professions. Mr. Brainwash is the name Thierry chose which compliments his particular style of art. James Gats changed his name to Jay Gatsby to make it sound more Hollywood. Mr. Brainwash is a great name for Thierry considering how he got so famous. Thierry brainwashed the entire city of Los Angeles in thinking that he is some famous artist. Thierry was able to reinvent himself quicker and legally. I would much rather be a fake artist than a notorious bootlegger. Art is also a much safer profession than bootlegging.

  20. I think Thierry re-invented himself because Gatsby got killed before he could re-invent himself. Thierry got to re-invent himself by owning a used clothing store, then selling it and then becoming an artist in Los Angeles "painting" pictures and selling it to people who are interested in buying them, plus he didn't get killed.I think Thierry re-invented himself because Gatsby got killed before he could re-invent himself. Thierry got to re-invent himself by owning a used clothing store, then selling it and then becoming an artist in Los Angeles “painting” pictures and selling it to people who are interested in buying them. Gatsby tried to re-invent himself when he tried to be “old money”, but was murdered by George because he thought Gatsby killed Myrtle, but it was really Daisy who killed Myrtle. So goes to show that some people can re-invent themselves and others can’t or can do it in a long period of time.

  21. Thierry was much more successful at re-inventing himself than Gatsby, because Thierry got what he wanted from his new life. When Gatsby died, he never got to become the man he wanted to become. He wanted to be someone of old money that inherited his wealth from someone else. He was never happy just having new money and being as rich as he was. Unfortunately, he died never being the person he wanted to become. On the other hand, Thierry was a man that started off as a used clothing store and not a penny to his name. He started off filming street art and other peoples work, and when it came time to make the film it was not as good as people hoped. So Thierry was told to go out and make so art, he did not just make art he created a whole art gallery. He did not really make the artwork himself; he paid other people to make the work for him. To finish Thierry’s transformation into an artist, he changed his name to Mr. Mind Control. His re-invention was successful, because he wanted to become an artist, so he did. He wanted quick fame, so even before people could see what he had they where waiting at his front door in the thousands. He had re-invented himself into an artist and loved every moment of it.

  22. Between Gatsby and Thierry, I think that Thierry did a better job reinventing himself. Although Gatsby moved into a giant house and changed his name he still didn’t get what he wanted. For Thierry he didn’t know exactly what he wanted but he came out happy. Gatsby did everything he did to look richer and to live as close to Daisy as possible, he risked his whole future just so he could invite Daisy over to win her back and he failed. Thierry is just some French guy who is out of his mind with a video camera. Thierry never really had a main goal besides to make a documentary but he failed horribly in the process. Although Thierry didn’t successfully make a documentary he found himself using a different form of art to express himself, Graffiti. The reason I think that Thierry did a better job is because he did it within the last 10 years. When Gatsby reinvented him self he did it a long time ago when things weren’t as advanced. Thierry became famous around a bunch of celebrities in Los Angeles so it was harder

  23. Thierry and Gatsby both reinvented themselves. Both of them went from low class to wealthy individuals. Gatsby did it through changing his name and inheriting wealth from his friend that had passed away. Thierry started out as a thrift store owner and then got caught up in filming street artists. Thierry was never a documentary film maker he pretended he was and was just a man who filmed everything he saw. Thierry then started hiring people to make art for him and he was never an artist. I think Thierry was most successful in that he did earn his wealth going from low class to very wealthy through taking large risks and having good connections.

  24. I think the one that was more successful in re inventing themselves was Thierry. One reason at the end of re inventing himself he accomplished his goal. He became a more famous more popular and became an “artist”. Gatsby he did a pretty good job too but he didn’t get to accomplish his goal. He didn’t get to be with Daisy since Daisy made her mind up that she wanted to be with tom and not him anymore and also at the end of the book he dies. But Thierry was more successful even though he used people to do his art he still got money for it and everybody started to know who he was just like Gatsby.

  25. Thierry did a better job inventing himself between Jay and him. Jay was very successful at what he did, but Thierry did in a completely different way and in a completely different day in age. Gatsby became rich during prohibition by being a bootlegger. There were plenty of people in this time doing this and getting rich very quickly. Thierry on the other hand put all of his life savings and all of his beliefs into this project. The project Thierry put everything into was supposed to be a joke and was never supposed to be as big as it ended up. Thierry had other plans in mind. Thierry put together and enormous art show and made over a million dollars off paintings. Although Gatsby reinvented himself very well, Thierry did it better because it was under different circumstances.

  26. Thierry was more successful at re-inventing himself than Gatsby. Gatsby made a lot of money and had crazy parties at his house but he didn’t stay true to himself and his back ground. Thierry is crazy and really strange and he makes a good amount of money but what makes him more successful is that he was able to stay true to what he loves. Sure he went from film making to street art but he never lied about where he came from while making that transition. Also what makes Thierry more successful is that he succeeds at what he wanted to do. Thierry wanted to become a film maker but that didn’t work out so well then he wanted to become a street artist and became famous in that world. Were as Gatsby never got what he wanted, the love of his life and the acceptance in the world of old money.

  27. I think Thierry was more successful at re-inventing himself than Gatsby. Thierry got what he wanted, which was to become artist that others recognize. Gatsby on the other hand, could not get what he wanted. Gatsby had more fame and money than Thierry but he did not get what he truly wanted. Gatsby's purpose for the re-inventing became useless because he couldn't get Daisy. This is why Thierry was more successful at re-inventing himself than Gatsby.

  29. Thierry was the most successful in reinventing himself. Gatsby in the beginning was successful, but in the end he ended up getting shot. Gatsby’s story is fiction and Thierry’s story is real. Thierry gives people hope that you can become something in life. Even though both Gatsby and Thierry lied to get where they are at Thierry did not do it illegally. Now today Thierry is known unlike Gatsby. Gatsby only changed just to impress Daisy. Gatsby’s intentions were to win Daisy over and did not really care about anything else. Even though Thierry was attempting to make a documentary he found himself by expressing himself in art. Thierry actually fought hard to get to the top by actually earning his own way, rather than by bootlegging. In the end Thierry accomplished more than Gatsby in reinventing himself. Gatsby ended up with nothing and did not end up with his dream girl.

  31. Between Thierry and Gatsby, I would say that for his time Gatsby was more successful because he had goals that was trying to accomplish, but failed because he let a lady’s crime stand in between him and his goals. Thierry didn’t have any goals; he didn’t have any skill or charm, but managed to become famous. Thierry was still Thierry when he re-invented himself. He just thought it would be cool to go by Mr. Brainwash. James was dreaming of making it since he was a teen and became a respected icon in his area. Everyone had their own opinions of him, but still showed up at his party. Thierry just got lucky.

  32. Thierry went from mysterious to famous. Gatsby went from being mysterious to reputable, mysterious. In this debate, Thierry wins. Thierry received experience from all those famous street artists. He figured out what makes art popular today. He took that knowledge and made art out of it. He ended up becoming one of the most successful artists to this day. He even helped out Madonna with her album cover. Gatsby, on the other hand, lied about getting his fame. He lied about being an Oxford man. Also, he tried to do everything he could do about his life, but failed miserably. Gatsby life was unsuccessful, he never really re-invented himself. Thierry was successful.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think Thierry was way more successful at re-inventing himself than Gatsby was. Thierry found great meaning in life throughout his attempts at making art. Gatsby seemed to fail at re-inventing himself because he ended up not getting back together with Daisy. Thierry just started to become famous through putting art together and becoming wealthy. Gatsby re-invented himself, but not as much as Thierry did. Thierry took lots of risks to become successful. Gatsby re-invented himself but only to get back with Daisy. Thierry also had to compete with other famous artists; he had to make his art just as good as theirs maybe even better. Thierry did an amazing job putting all different kinds of art together and made a successful showing out of it.

  34. I believe they were both the same at re-inventing themselves, in The Great Gatsby, Gatsby show that he re-invented himself by going to war then he came back with no money but still managed to make a fortune, just so Daisy could notice him and perhaps love him again. He made his money by bootlegging liquor , and inhered some money from Dan Cody. When in the other hand Thierry re-invented himself to record everything on his camera because his mother died and he didn’t have memories with her well like in tapes so he could watch them over and over again. So he decided that he wasn’t going to miss another moment so he decided to record his whole life, so where ever he went he took his camera too. Thierry got his money from him hiring people to make his painting but he was smart enough to make his own art show, and sell all of the paintings and make him rich. They both ended up being rich when they started out not having a lot of money.

  35. Gatsby and Thierry were both successful in re-inventing themselves but Thierry was a little more successful at it. He went from being weird things to an actual amazing artist. To actually do something big in his life and Gatsby went from nothing to being nothing at the end. Gatsby inherited money from his best friend and Thierry worked real hard to become someone important in society. If it wasn’t for his bad filming skills, he would have never realized himself and what he can do with art. In the novel Gatsby was never really someone important, the only reason people knew him from his name is because of all the parties he threw. In the film Thierry was this weird French guy who had his own shop but closed it down because of filming. He decided to film graffiti art and had contact with Banksy. Banksy is the most secretive illegal artist in the world who made Thierry become famous. If Banksy were to not ask Thierry to make art of his own, he wouldn’t be a rich, known artist. At the end Thierry made something of himself and Gatsby didn’t that is why I chose Thierry as being more successful at re-inventing himself.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Between Gatsby and Thierry, Thierry was more successful at re-inventing himself, because no one really knows the truth about Thierry. Most people just see Thierry and believe he’s a great artist, but the artists who were working with him could see the truth that he really has no talent, in art whatsoever. However, even those other artists knew the truth; Thierry ultimately got what he wanted and became a famous artist. Gatsby on the other hand, Gatsby spent five years of his life trying to get the girl of his dream and tried to make the past happen again, because he couldn’t let go of the fact that he’ll never be with Daisy again. He re-invented himself to get a girl, but in the end he didn’t get anything he wanted.

  37. Its obvious that Thierry did a better job of reinventing himself then Gatsby, because he did not die. Gatsby actually did a terrible job compared to Thierry. Thierry started from nothing like Gatsby did, but did not end up loosig it all. Thierry was just a French guy who had no idea what he was doing and became succesful. The workers that he hired for his art exhibit even thought he was mentaly retarded. Gatsby was not successfull at recreating himself because Nick caught him lying about his life story acouple of times. Gatsby was also not successfull because he did not end up with Daisy and that was like his goal, to win Daisys heart back. Thierry achived his goal of becoming a street artist "Mr.Brainwash" even though he did not know what he was doing he became successfull by selling his "Art". Thierry was more succesfull because he actually tried to achive his goal. He put all this money and time into it for it to happened. Gatsby did not really try he had all these parties just hoping that Daisy would come by.

  38. Thierry was the most successful in reinventing himself than Gatsby. Thierry is a little different from Gatsby because in his case he didn’t mean to reinvent himself he just followed orders which lead to him changing who he is now. Gatsby on the other hand did become rich on accident but he always wanted to be that person. Gatsby was not successful because, he didn’t get what he wanted the most which was to be old to be old money he was new money. it was not possible for Gatsby to become old money because his money came from himself, he was the first generation he never inherited the money which need to do to become old money. the only way he could become old money was by getting with daisy which was never going to happen because, even though she didn’t like tom it would have looked bad for her to leave him. Gatsby was not completely successful in reinventing himself. Thierry was completely successful in reinventing himself because, he went from being someone who just flows this great street artiest into being a huge fake street artiest. Banksy end him out to go put on a "little show" so, that he would not get bothered by him. Thierry took that advice and made it in to something that changed his life forever. he was successful because, he end up getting everything he ever wanted, he got the fame, the money, and after all he put his family through he still has them and they are all happy with what he’s done.

  39. I think Gatsby was not close to being successful at re-inventing himself. Gatsby was doing well in the beginning of the novel. He got to see and talk to Daisy, again. After spending some time with her, he began to become less successful. Gatsby was murdered before he could have become a new, better man. Gatsby tried everything to have Daisy. He threw big parties, just for her to show up, but Gatsby always seemed lonely and sad. Also, he, finally, met up with Daisy and spent a couple of days with her, but he wanted more from her. Gatsby did not appreciate what he had on the present day. Gatsby kept asking for more on things he could not have. Instead of re-inventing himself and being happy, Gatsby was killed before anything good, in his point of view, could happen. Overall, I believe Gatsby was far from becoming successful at re-inventing himself.

  40. In my opinion, Thierry is more successful than Gatsby. In the novel Gatsby’s main goals was to become rich and to win daisy’s love again. Gatsby did become rich but he had to go through some good and some bad thing. While in the process of becoming rich, something he had to do was bootleg and that is dangerous. While Gatsby was trying to win daisy’s love back, he had to make so many parties just so MAYBE one day daisy would show up to one of his parties. After all the things Gatsby did, he ended up being killed by Mr. Wilson. On the other hand, Thierry was always filming. He would take his camera everywhere and he would record everything. Until one day he decided to make his own movie about street art. While he was making the movie, he pay people to make art for him and he was going around posting it up in the streets and that’s how he became famous. I think that what he did wasn’t so creative but he was smart enough to do it and now he’s living a good life and people see him as an artist.

Between Thierry and Gatsby, Thierry re-invented himself more successfully than Gatsby. Gatsby did indeed re-invent himself from an unknown man to a rich and very well-known man but in the end he tried to be someone he was not, and that backfired on him costing him to never realize that he will never be with daisy, and for that his life was cut too short. While Thierry was not indeed an artist he successfully reinvented himself form an unknown filmmaker to a worldwide artist. It might have not been his own art but he knew how to use other people’s art and make it into his own, and make an income out of it. In the end of it they both reinvented themselves but Gatsby lost his life out of it and Thierry became an artist.

  42. I think Thierry was more successful in re-inventing himself. There is no doubt that Gatsby wasn’t successful. He just wasn’t as successful as Thierry. Gatsby was rich and powerful; he completely changed his image of poor farm boy to rich executive to impress a girl that he was madly in love with. Unfortunately for Gatsby the girl he loves was a spineless coward and a shallow moron who is too intimidated by her husband to express her feelings. This same girl was also the reason Gatsby ends up dead. Even though she turned him down he still took the rap for a hit and run and vehicular manslaughter. Gatsby was less successful than Thierry because he fell short of his dream he didn’t reach his goal. Thierry on the other hand exceeded his goals. Thierry like Gatsby stared on the bottom rung of the ladder he was a looser. Thierry then realized how fun it was to film movies so he took a crack a film making. The films he took were mostly home videos. He never worked for a TV. Station but he had fun doing it. Thierry then stumbled upon art, not just any boring fancy pants art but street art. An art with no limitations, the world was his canvas so Thierry grabbed paint can and went to work. He learned from many other street artist and after a while was able to open his own art gallery. He took classic art and made them more exciting, at least in his own eyes. The reason Thierry was more successful than Gatsby was because one Thierry didn’t die trying to be something he wasn’t and two he was able to accomplish his goals.

  43. In my opinion Thierry re-invented himself more successfully than Gatsby because he was able to re-invent himself multiple times throughout the movie. Thierry started out owning a thrift store and then becoming a film maker, before becoming an artist. Every time Thierry changed his profession, he changed who he was. After being a film maker Thierry becomes an artist and he comes up with a new name for himself, just like Gatsby did. Although Gatsby changed his name he was never able to reach his goal of becoming old money. Therefore he was not a very successful man. Thierry on the other hand was able to reach his goal and was able to make money from it making him a successful man. That is why I believe that Thierry is a more successful man than Gatsby.

  44. Unfortunately, I would have to say that Thierry did a way better job than Gatsby by re-inventing himself into a better man. Thierry jump from filming everything to making money off street art; something he lacked the skill in but it paid off. Gatsby, on the other hand failed to re-invite himself because he had so many flas. In the book The Great Gatsby, Jordan and Nick had already suspected that he wasn’t who he said he was from the first meeting. Even though Thierry made a lot of money in the process, but in my opinion I think he re-invented himself in the wrong I just think he could something a little different to re-invent himself.

  46. I think Thierry successful at re-inventing himself because he had started from scratch and worked his way up from nothing. Gatsby was not successful because he got caught at the end. Thierry had nothing and started up and made millions of painting he didn’t even make. Gatsby had millions but lost it all at the end. Thierry was constantly filming. He took his camera everywhere no matter where he went or what he was doing. Then, he took his videos and made a movie that was not successful at all. Then he was told to have an art show so Thierry did. He told other people to make the art for him and he sold them at his art show and made millions but other people’s art. Even though that is wrong, he still made a lot of money and he is living a good life now.

  47. Thierry definitely was more successful in re-inventing himself. Jay Gatsby was unique in his personality, but not in the way that he became known. Many people were involved in the same profession as Jay, and they all made their money the same way. Thierry, on the other hand, was quite unique. Although there are many street artists, not one of them is the same in any way. Thierry literally started from stratch. It almost seemed as if he went to sleep, woke up, and decided that he would be an artist. Thierry gives people hope within themselves. He makes us believe that something as easy as painting walls will get you farther in life than being instintly rich, like Gatsby for instince. Overall, Gatsby became something that already existed to become well known. Thierry invented himself for people to recegnize his name.

  48. Thierry did a better job in reinventing himself because he did it in such a little amount of time. He also put little effort into re inventing himself. He paid people to draw the art and, went through a little book of other people’s art to decide what pieces he wanted to use and make them his own. This makes him more successful then Gatsby because Gatsby wanted to change himself to be a certain way and, Thierry wanted to be successful except he wasn’t sure of how he wanted to be successful. He just went from job to job until he finally found one where he could pay a bunch of people to put art together for him and still get paid for it. That is why i believe Thierry is better at reinventing himself.

  49. Between Gatsby and Thierry I would have to say that Thierry is more successful. He finds things that he likes to do, which is art and people enjoy looking at it. Gatsby, he died in the end, he didn’t have a goal in his life besides winning daisy’s love. Gatsby he was trying to act like he was a different person and whether it was sooner or later they all eventually found out who he really was. He was a different person for one reason only and that reason is because of daisy but eventually it failed. Thierry he was smart about what he was doing. He paid people to do the art for his art show and still till this day he is rich and he hasn’t done anything, all he does is boss people around. They both had a goal to accomplish but only Thierry accomplished it, Gatsby didn’t get what he wanted because eventually daisy really went back with tom, daisy only stuck around because Gatsby was “rich”. Thierry has an amazing brain and he used it very well and stuck with his goal and accomplished it after all.

  51. In my opinion between Gatsby and Thierry, I can clearly state that Gatsby was unsuccessful “re-inventing” himself. Thierry was more successful because he did not have the faith as Gatsby did. Gatsby needed to die in order to be happy. All Thierry needed to do was copy “Art” he saw around the world and try to make a art show. Gatsby tried to change his past and future but ended up dying. Thierry had no idea what he was doing with his “Filming” but got a lucky break through when they made the Art gallery. Thierry also made his lucky break when he met Banksy. Overall the one who was most successful was Thierry not because he invested all of his money hoping it would work but the fact that he didn’t die when he became rich like Gatsby.

  52. Thierry was more successful at re-inventing himself than Gatsby. Thierry became famous all over in the newspapers for his art show and for “his art”. He also got millions of dollars by selling his art and his art show. Even though, he used art made from real artists and he just changed little things people thought it was his art and he was a real artist. So, pretty much this is why he became more successful because he was able to brain wash people, become famous, and become rich. Gatsby would have been successful but he was doing everything just to win a girl. Plus he wasn’t or he didn’t become famous like Thierry did and didn’t live long enough to make himself famous. If he would have lived longer he probably end up in jail because he was in illegal businesses, and that’s not a good way to be successful at re-inventing yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Gatsby was more successful in re-inventing himself because no one knew about his past. He left his family and completely started over. Even though Gatsby’s re-invention took a longer time he made his more believable. Thierry’s re-invention was unrealistic and clearly only the sane people realize that Thierry is not an artist but just some guy that takes other peoples art and puts them together and has someone else make the so called art. Banksy and everyone that helped him knew that his overnight fame was ridiculous. Gatsby changed everything about himself. He made up and new family, changed his name, and bought a mansion. Gatsby had a purpose for re-inventing himself. Thierry just stumbled upon something that made him an artist over night. Although Thierry went to great extents to make himself what he is, it just didn’t seem as thorough as Gatsby’s re-invention.

  54. In the process of watching "Exit through the Gift Shop" and reading The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, I realized that Jay Gatsby and Thierry are exceedingly similar. Jay Gatsby started out at James Gatz, an average young man who believed he could achieve more in his life than his parents had; he was determined to have Daisy. He changed his name to Jay Gatsby to create a superior life for himself and his “soon to be wife”. Thierry on the other hand, was somewhat satisfied with his life to begin with; he owned a thrift store and spent almost all of his time recording every single waking moment, but after he began to film his documentary about Banksy he realized that he could have a much more sufficient life if he were to become a well known artist. Both Gatsby and Thierry decided that if they changed their life that they would be much happier; Gatsby was determined to become rich for Daisy and Thierry became rich for the popularity and money.

  55. I would have to say that Thierry did a better job in brainwashing people into believing that he reinvented himself. He made himself a millionaire by hiring people to make street art for him. Thierry did it because he loved it, but couldn’t exactly make the art. Gatsby was not as successful as Thierry because he only became what he was for a woman, unfortunately that woman didn’t even care for him anymore. When Gatsby died, all his wealth faded away, and nothing was left. Thierry became a millionaire and still had his wife, and kids who loved him and supported him. Thierry has done a pretty well job at becoming something he’s not. So Thierry has done a better job at reinventing himself.

  56. I think Thierry is more in reinventing himself for many reasons. Gatsby changed himself for a girl who ended up getting him killed anyways. Gatsby built an image for himself but was never truly the person he built himself up to be. Gatsby isn’t even a real person; James Gatz Thierry on the other hand, went from a thrift shop owner to a street artist. Thierry loved every part of street art and got so invested that it made him want to change himself. He was influenced by he saw as art and wanted to be part of it. Yes, he did take his other people’s art and got money for putting in his gallery but he still achieved his goal. Thierry’s re-invention was clearly better than Gatsby’s.

  57. In a way, Theirry was the one who made himself a better sensation than Gatsby could, because for one thing: Thierry is a real individual who had amitions and goals that he wanted to accomplish (some which he did) from a camera man to an artist. Gatsby on the other hand was a made up person in a story, and even though both of them created their made-up personas; one died while the other countinues to follow his goals and ambitions. In addition, Gatsby decided to chase the women he loved: Daisy; that love was what led to his downfall. While Theirry was seen as "Mr. Brainwash" of the street art world; his obsession made him a star comodity even though he was labeled as: "sold-out."

  58. If I personally had to choose between Gatsby and Thierry, in terms of who is more successful. I would defiantly choose Thierry; although he might be a little crazy you have to give him credit because he started from nothing and became this famous painter who made millions of other peoples work. It may be unfair that he got rich off of other peoples work, in a weird way he was smart for doing that. Thierry started off by having an interest in film, and would film almost everything he did. Then moved onto filming other people complete work. Then from filming other people make art, he grew an interest in art. So he had an art show and it was very successful. Thierry was very successful and at least he made something of his life. Unlike Thierry, Gatsby tried to make something of his life but unsuccessfully failed then ended up getting murdered. Gatsby didn’t achieve much in his life besides making a fortune off someone else.

  59. Thierry was much more successful at re-inventing himself than Gatsby. For one Gatsby is despised for having his money by people such as Tom Buchanan, however Thierry is praised. Thierry’s praise comes from the fact that he came up out of nowhere. He started as thrift store owner, to a “film maker” and finally to an artist. Motivation is the key to Thierry’s success. At his thrift store he would sell unconventionally stitched clothes as if they were a premium, emphasizing its differences, this of course made him get away with selling complete crap for inflated prices. As a film maker he filmed every little insignificant thing until this led him to his street art “documentary”. This however turned out to be for his own personal gain because he never actually was making one. This shadows Gatsby’s behavior of using others for their personal benefits, such as inviting Nick to his party to get close to Daisy. And for his street artist career he goes straight to the top. He hires many professional artists to create his content, which he then passes off for his own, and hosts a giant art gallery. Artists such as Banksy were doing it for years before they gained any notoriety, they seemed absolutely appalled that someone could do such a thing and become an overnight celebrity. But they also praised him in the odd way that they hadn’t been able to do such themselves, they couldn’t put him on a pedestal for his art, but they could put him on one for his motivation.

  60. Although Gatsby figured out a way to become a wealthy man, he never accomplished what he had desired. Therefore, Thierry was more successful at re-inventing himself than Gatsby. Not only did Thierry make millions of dollars, but he also did a good job changing who he was. He went from an owner of a thrift store, to a weird film maker, to an annoying artist. Gatsby just wanted to become old rich, and marry a rich, beautiful lady. Thierry wanted to be something; anything from a filmmaker to an “artist”. Thierry put many things aside to achieve what he wanted. Even though the art wasn’t his own work, it was his idea. Also, both of the situations were completely different. Gatsby had an obsessive ambition, and Thierry had a goal. Overall, Thierry was more successful than Gatsby because of the he got exactly what he wanted.

  61. I think that Thierry was more successful at re-inventing himself because he was really committed in wanting to be known as “mister brain wash” (a.k.a MBW). Gatsby only wanted to be known as rich because he only had one goal in his life which was to get Daisy back just because he was rich and had a big house. Gatsby really didn’t do much to become who he was because he had help from his rich friend Dan Cody, and Thierry went through the experience of meeting street artists and then came up with a goal of trying to be known more than the other artists even though he himself wasn’t really an artist. All Gatsby did to get noticed was make big parties and invite whoever wanted to go and Thierry just came up of making an art show so people can come see it and by this he reached his goal to be noticed as MBW and also became rich at the same time. Thierry was more successful than Gatsby because Gatsby at the end didn’t get the girl and he got killed and Thierry did become known as an artist and he didn’t even make any art himself.

  62. Between Thierry and Gatsby, Thierry had become more successful in reinventing himself. Although Gatsby might have done a fantastic job throwing people off with all the stories about how he has gained his fame, the truth is that somebody gave him the opportunity. All he had to do was listen to simple directions on how to run the business and become wealthy. Thierry on the other hand, had experienced and seen art being made on the streets and stole some ideas from many different artists. The ideas that he took from these artists later helped him be known as Mr. Brainwash. All the art was made by others that were payed to make it, while he was directing them what to make. He made millions selling all of this art that really was not even hand created by him. He truly did the better job of reinventing himself and brainwashing people to think that this was truly worth the money. He is not an artist. Others may think differently not seeing his documentary.

  63. Although Gatsby’s Re –invention was for a more morally justified cause, Thierry’s re invention ends up in his ultimate fame and glory. While reading The Great Gatsby, one wants no more than to see Gatsby fulfill his desires however, the more the reader dives into the novel the more apparent it becomes that his success would never prevail. Thierry on the other hand not only fulfilled his re-invention but, also partook in the riches that came with it. Gatsby’s reinvention was brought upon by his desire to woo a woman, and is ended by his tragic, but predictable demise. Although one would like to say the same for Thierry, his lucky is quite the opposite. Thierry’s re-invention ends not only in wealth but, also in a fame that reached throughout street art galleries all over the world. Overall, Thierry was more successful in his attempts to re-invent himself.

  64. I think that Thierry was the most successful in re-inventing himself because at first he started out in videotaping himself and his family’s every move. Until one day he met an artist that would change his life and make him successful by fallowing Banksy and others. Throughout the Movie Thierry is the weird guy who fallowing and records the life of graffiti to make a “film” and also makes them believe something Thierry is not. After he realizes he wants more than just videotaping, he begins to want to be an artist and to have the excitement as he saw other artists did while taping them. Thierry after has his Art show and becomes wealthy and known for it.

  65. Thierry was more successful at re-inventing himself than Gatsby. This is because when Thierry began out he was a clothing store owner. While Gatsby was a determined man who wanted to be great, and by the end of the book he was still a determined man who want to be a great man. Thierry in the end of the movie is accepted by the generally public to be an artist and he no longer felt the need to film everything in his life. Second Gatsby gives up on the illusion when he thinks he has daisy. While Thierry is still an artist till this day with his own website. The fact that Thierry didn’t change back when he reached his goal mean he was better at re-inventing himself.

  66. Gatsby was more successful at reinventing himself. Thierry was too, but the big point is that Gatsby came from poverty where Thierry was well off in the US. Gatsby went from a no name and reinventing himself into one of the most infamous characters in West and East Egg. Gatsby started his career by working on a boat and inheriting 25,000 dollars were as of Thierry he had a shop in the US where he sold cheap shirts for high profits. Thierry was making a name for his self before he reinvented himself. Comparing that to Gatsby there is one big difference, and that’s Gatsby had a harder time establishing wealth and wealth is a big key in reinventing their appearance to others. Once Gatsby had cash he threw big parties attracting fame to him and to his image. He had everyone in West and East Egg at his feet at one point. Everyone wanted to know who Gatsby was. Gatsby kept personal information to himself so no one could judge him. Gatsby went from a son of poor parents into one of the wealthiest men in Rhode Island. Gatsby was more successful at reinventing himself.

  67. Deciding if Thierry from the movie “Check out the Gist Shop”, or Gatsby from the novel “The Great Gatsby” has re-invented themselves successfully, I would choose Thierry. The reason why I believe that is, because Thierry actually became successful at the end, when Gatsby did not become successful, or did not achieve his goal. Ironically in the beginning of the movie I thought that Thierry would go no ware with his career, but after he watched others and created fantastic artwork, going at night and showing of his work on city walls (even though he wasn’t an artist at all) he really became a star. Gatsby on the other hand wasn’t successful at all. Even when Gatsby had parties, thousands of people came and met Gatsby, he still ended up dead and no one actually went to his funeral. Now that is sad.

  68. Who was more successful at re-inventing himself, Gatsby or Thierry?

I say that Thierry was more successful at re-inventing himself. Gatsby was successful of changing himself by his name, and how much money he had. He got all the money from bootlegging. That means he was once poor, but became rich. The reason he changed himself is so that he can make his love (Daisy) fall in love with him. He was successful of getting her attention and them both talking to each other again. But all the change he went through failed because he never got to have Daisy, instead he ended up getting shot. Thierry on the other hand was very successful. He started off with a cloth store. Then he moved on filming everything, and everywhere he went. His filming led him to be introduced with the graffiti world. He started filming different graffiti artists. Eventually he met Banksy. Banksy was the master of graffiti painting. Thierry was like his student, he learned a lot from Banksy. One day Banksy tells him to go make an art show. So Thierry made an art show that displayed over 200 pictures. The thing was that he hired people do to the paintings and he took credit for it. So he made millions and now he is considered as an artist. This is why I believe that Gatsby was not more successful then Thierry.

Even though Thierry was more successful than Gatsby, I can also see the point Jreis is making. Gatsby went from absolutely nothing, to a very powerful and popular man. If Jay Gatsby’s goal was to only become a wealthy man, then he would have definitely been more successful than Thierry. Thierry’s goal was to become a famous artist in Los Angeles, but he also was the most successful artist in a really short time period. It’s obvious that Gatsby went through more obstacles to get what he wanted, but sadly, he never succeeded. Also, Gatsby was trying to get this accomplished for a big part of his life. Thierry decided that he wanted to do an art show because Banskey told him to. Theirry got very lucky.

I think Thierry was more successful than Gatsby was since Thierry started from rock bottom and came to the top while Gatsby just rearranged his life by changing his name. Thierry went out and researched and studied what made art popular and what was appealing to the public. His studying of popular art caused him to start making his own art and constructing paintings, structures, and other modern creations that brought people to his art shows and cause them to buy these pieces of art. Thierry became famous by making and selling art while Gatsby didn’t get what he wanted. Gatsby wasn’t as successful as Thierry because Gatsby had a goal and he changed his whole life around for that one goal which was to get back with Daisy. Gatsby didn’t achieve his goal because Gatsby didn’t win Daisy back into his life. Gatsby didn’t achieve his goal and Thierry did. That is why Thierry is more successful than Gatsby.

  71. I feel that Gatsby was more successful at reinventing himself because he came from nothing and did everything himself where as Thierry just kind of came out of nowhere without really working that much and having other people do the work that he said he made.

  72. I think that Thierry was more successful then Gatsby because even though they both reinvented them selves, Thierry life didn't end in devastation, well not yet. Thierry started from the bottom with going with street artists and examining himself from a professional how the job gets done. Unlike Gatsby, Thierry had many goals from becoming a great movie maker, becoming a famous artists, and having his art posted around the world. Gatsby on the other hand had just one goal in life which was his motivation and it was to get Daisy back in his life. Also Thierry's goal were achieved and Gatsby's were not because of his death and Gatsby not being with Daisy at the end.

  73. I believe that Thierry was more successful than Gatsby at reinventing himself because at least in his vision he now had become a pretty good artist, and he did it through self-promotion which seems kind of hard to do. Thierry also had achieved his dream Gatsby had not, plus Thierry did not get killed.Normally I would give the award to Gatsby for the rags to riches story but his unrealistic goals were never met but Thierry met his.
