Books vs Movies

This post is for juniors only.

As crazy and out of contral as Mark Borchardt seems, he has one thing in common with Guy Montag (and Ray Bradbury) - they are both passionate. Montag (and Bradbury) are passionate about books...
...and Mark is passionate about movies...
For this entry, please reflect on one of the following topics. Please keep in mind that your responses should be thoughtful and thorough. They should be paragraph length. Grammar, spelling and mechanics all count. You only need to reflect on one of the prompts. Where you go with it is up to you.
  • Which are more important to society - books or movies?
  • What heroic qualities do Mark and Montag both possess?
  • What character flaws do Mark and Montag both possess?
  • Whose story is more tragic - Mark's or Montag's?
  • Montag's passion for books makes him heroic, and yet Mark's passion for movies makes him foolish. How do you account for this difference?

  1. I think Montags story is more tragic then Marks because Montag lives in a sociaty where he slowly learns of the tragic life he lives in and when he tries to prove something noone believes him. Marks isnt as tragic because hes just tryin to make movies and even tho hes pashionate I think he should just try to live a normal life.

  2. I think Mark's story is more tragic than Montag's because it is more about our reality. It isn't set in the future and has an opposite idea of the world. This movie showed daily life problem for some people. Most people in the world have money issues. They do not have enough money to pay for most of the things they want and suffer to pay for the things they need. Also, he is trying to achieve a goal that he set for himself. Overall, I believe Mark's story is more sad than Montag's

  3. I believe both movies and books are important to society, but books are more important because you need something what of a pre-planned dialogue and description of the scene in order to make a movie, and you can visualize things in your own way in books. In movies you can only see what the director wants you to see most of the time. Also if you think about which one comes first it is usually the book before the movie this also usually makes fro a good movie I have noticed. From Jaws to Godfather and James Bond, and now Harry Potter to many other good movies.

  4. which one is more important in society? well personally im gonna have to say books. think about it. we need books, without books the bible wouldnt exist, people wont learn how to read or write and if you really think about it. movies need books. why and how? the read and write. we cant write a script if we dont know how to write, the actors can read it cause they cant. we need books. so my hats goes off to books

  7. Books are more important to society because it is the most reliable form of information. Mark and montag both have the passion to strive for what they want. Mark is flawed because of his over confidence and montag is flawed because of the tainted futuristic society he lives in. Marks story is more tragic just because it true. Marks society is still not yet in need of dire saving. Yet.

  8. I believe that books are more important to our society. with out books we would not be as educated as we are. If we only relied on movies we would only get a few facts. we would not get the whole picture. Books not only provide knowledge they provide entertainment. If you read you can picture whatever you want. You can make the characters your own. With t.v. we only get entertainment and it leaves oohing to the imagination. The characters are some one else's thoughts. Books are also important because the provide important records. Back before the dark ages the Romans wrote down all this important information such as diseases and technological ideas. If they had kept the records think how far we could have come. Books hold tins of important information thea we can't get from t.v.

  9. Montag and Mark never give up on what their doing. Even when people look down upon them or don't have trust with him, they keep on chugging along. Nothing will stop them in order to get their way. Even if it takes large amounts of money or putting your life at stake. In the end, they want to make people feel good about themselves that they have enjoyed a good book or a good movie.

  10. I believe books are more important than movies in society. Novels tell a story and teach the reader/audience, while a movie just tells the story. Books are very important and are possessed throughout the world. An interesting point is that many movies are made after a book, when barely any books are made after a movie. The book usually always comes first, because they are looked at more important to our society. Although movies are significant to many, books educate and tell the story, which is why they are more important.

  11. In my opinion I believe Mark's story is more tragic than Montags. Mark has had to overcome difficult obstacles in life, such as losing his wife, having to pay large bills, and having to take care of his kids by himself. This movie showed daily life problems for some people living today. Mark has to live with that one feeling when you never know when the financial company may come and take away your house. Overall, I think Mark's story is more tragic than Montag's.

  12. Which is more important is society, books vs. movies. Don't get me wrong, movies are wonderful but books have more importance than any movie. Books can teach you life lesson or make you see the world in a different way. Not to mention, certain books were into movies but they left important parts out of it. Overall, reading a book can challenge your mind.

  13. I think movies are more important to society because it gives you more of a visual picture.Movies let you think for yourself by seeing with your own eyes and thats something that books can not give you.Books can only let you imagine what you read,it's only better to see for yourself that way it is easier for one to make judgement.I think society would rather better be off getting the first hand look.Movies send messages as well do books, but it would be better to see the message than read the message.

  14. Montag had passion to find the reason for books and was willing to go the distance. Mark already knows how special movies are which is why he has been trying to make a movie his whole life. Montag was considered heroic for thinking for himself by discovering the significance in books. Mark has the desire to film, but lacks the talent. its not his passion for movies that makes him foolish. its his characteristics that make him foolish. probably because of all the drugs and alcohol he has consumed his whole life.

  15. Mark Borchardt story is more tragic then Guy Montag's. Marks story is based on reality, and throughout his life he had to overcome obstacles unlike Guy Montag. Fahrenheit 451 is just a book the characters are not based on real people. The movie showed how typical Americans struggle on a daily basis. All throughout America people are struggling with money, divorce, loss of kids and the movie showed it. There are no such things as mechanical hound's, what the movie showed was true. People can relate to the movie unlike the book which makes it more tragic.

  16. Montags story is the sadder of the two due to the fact that every thing in Montag's life was ripped apart and the only hope he was left with was the hope of traveling with former literates of society and starting over from the desolate ruins of his former dwelling. while mark has a future, no matter how small it is , mark has choices and dreams that he is striving and reaching out for. Mark has family friends and alcohol to keep him happy and Montag has some older men that he just met to keep him company. All in all , Mark is better off due to his dreams and the company that he has and will maintain through out his life. ,Montag on the other hand is virtually alone and has only the hopes of returning to a barren land to restart his society.

  17. In my opinion movies are alot more important to society to then books because alot more people would rather watch T.V or a movie then read. It just how the country is, alot of kids don't like to read books I mean as you grow older im sure you learn to like to read more. Another reason why Movies are alot more important is because sometimes people don't know how to read and they have to rely on movies. Also I feel like movies get the point across faster than books.

  18. I think that mark story is more tragic than Montag. It is more tragic because in Montag story it start out bad for everyone in society but toward the end there is hope for everyone. Mark story is that he had a dream as a kid even when it was dad but don’t see it possible for him to make it rich by making movie because people now of day really don’t care for stories in movies they care about the action. Second people really don’t like black and white films and it seems that all he is making. I don’t see the message in his movies that what make the ending of Montag story good he know there is a message to spread. I think that mark should realize that he not going to make it rich making movies and just keep making movies as a hobby.

  19. i love movies but i think books are more important to society. Movies are interesting and fun but books give more detail and make you think even more. Movies usually come from books anyways so reading a book before watching its movie could help you understand the movie a lot more. There are many interesting books for anyone and it is also important for your education.

  20. In society books are more important than movies. Books give us knowledge and teach us new things about our society. With books we can keep learning and not make the same mistakes. To keep the world informed about things we need write them down and save them, so there for we need books. Books can entertain us too just like movies. Many of the movies that are being made are based off books. I think that books are more important than movies in our society.

  21. Movies are great however books are more important to society. Think about how many movies are based on books? Without books people wouldn't know how to read and write, so in a way it would just be like the society that Montag lived in. Sure movies are fun to watch but they can't tell you what the person is thinking or feeling they can only show you.

  22. Which are more important to society - books or movies?

I have to go with what Billy said above because it's true. Books are important and all in society because they give us knowledge on importnat things but us kids don't like reading. So i'd have to say that movies are more important to, and for the society because it lets people relax and learn new stuff without having to sit down and read a bunch of words for hours. Movies also make a whole lot of money which is then good for the economy, so i have to go with movies over books.

  23. Many people think books would be more important but I disagree. To me, movies are much easier to follow than books therefore, people get a better understanding. Nobody likes to read from a text book or anything, they’d rather just watch a movie about it. They would probably learn a lot more from it also. Every time I read a book I fall asleep and I’m usually not smart enough to understand books. I understand every movie though. Therefore, movies are more important.

  24. I think Montag's story is more tragic because he learns that the society is not as smart as he is. Montag's story shows how the society doesn't care about learning and all they care about is watching TV. Montag has to step out of his way to make himself happy by getting books and keeping them a secret. By Montag keeping the books a secret, he puts his life on the line. Montag has to fight against the government and the law to make him happy. Montag is happy when he is reading books and in the society he lives in, it's against the law. It make Montag's story more tragic because Montag is left out and he is in a world where what makes him happy isn't allowed.

  25. A lot of people would say that movies are more important and i agree but disagree. I think that movies are way easier to watch and understand than books are to read and understand. But we also see, that if you read a book and then watch the movie, a lot of detail gets left out. By reading a book, you get a lot more detail. You learn way more information rather than just sitting and watching a movie. You can't really get anywhere in life now-a-days if you don't know how to read and write. We wouldn't know how to do both of those if we just watched movies and never read anything. I see both sides, but I think books are overall more important.

  26. Mark's story is my tragic than Montag's story is. Montag at the end of the book found other men that are as devoted and passinate to re-living books as much as he is. Montag and the men also might get a chance to bring the books back because the city and everyone is it was destroyed; they have a chance to rebulit a new community with books in it. While Mark has been trying for years to make a movie that will make him money and be a seller. Mark also doesn't seem like he will ever have a big seller movie, due to his sistuations at home, and money problems.

  27. Which are more important to society - books or movies? I think movies are more important to society for many reasons. First, people would rather watch a documentary than read a book about the same thing. Also, you are able to receive the same knowledge faster and nowadays, the faster the better. If there is a movie based off a book, people would choose the movie. People’s attentions span’s nowadays aren’t like what they use to be, people would rather watch or play video games than to read or do homework. That is why I think a movie would be more important to society than a book.

  28. Montag's passion for books makes him heroic, and yet Mark's passion for movies makes him foolish. How do you account for this difference?

Montag's passion for books makes him heroic because in his society its something that people banned for its dislikes. Yet it also makes him foolish because all he needs to do is not read, but he is to passionate about books, Montag believes he can't live without them. Mark is foolish because of the all financial problems showing the possibility that his movies will never become finished or well known, but never gives up. Mark is heroic for the passion that he shows in his movies and the determination to never give up until he accomplishes his dream, no matter how many people don't believe in him. Montag and Mark both show characteristics of heroism and foolishness in their dreams, but something they both share is the fact that they both don't ever give in to their society.

  29. Whether you like it or not books are more important than movies. Books help us learn teach us things. with out books everyone would be ignorant and we'd be caveman. Movies may teach us small things sometimes but not what books teach us movies are more for fun. Some people would say that books are fun to but thats a small amount of people. books are also more important to us because they were used so people learned stuff that other people would find out like when people would go out and explore the world they would write it down so other people also knew what was out there. With movies you couldn't do that a long time ago because they haven't been around for as long as books not even close.

  30. The heroic characteristic that Montag and Mark both share is the fact that the both don't give up and throw in the towel. Montag could have just stopped reading and start burning books like he did before, but he doesn't. when he reads for the first time he knows then and there that he wants to do that. although he can not remember everything he reads like he wants to, he still reads because that's what he whats. Mark is in the same boat as Montag. he wants to make a movies, but he doesn't have the money or the right people to make his vision a reality. he doesn't stop, even though it may seem the world his against everything he does he keeps on trying to reach his dream of making a movie. Mark and Guy Montag both share the same, but different dedication to their hopes and dreams.

  31. The heroic qualities that Mark and Montag possess is that they keep going and never give up. Even though they don't really have a chance in making it big or better, they haven't given up yet. And many people wouldn't be able to do what they are doing. They are both going all out of the box just to change. And I like that Mark still keeps his kids close while he is filming and thats so cool of him. That just means that he really cares about his kids. But I know that I probably would be one of those people who would give up on the situations they are both going throught. Mark is so foolish in the documentary and he still keeps going. Hopefully he made it big in life or at least just a little.

  32. Even thought people don't enjoy reading books, it's one of the greatest recourses we have. If we didn't have books there would be a world of non sense. Movies are no different then books its a good way to learn something but not everything.

  33. Books and movies are equally important in this society. Books paint a picture in our heads perfectly. Whether its romance, crime or a comedy. Books are always better then the movies as well, but were in 2010 now. We are lazy people and do not read as much as we should. Movies do the reading for us, which is nice. I am not one to complain. Sometimes the Hollywood touch they put in the movies if all we need to understand a scenario.

  34. In my opinion, I think movies are now more important than books. Nowadays, people are lazy and don't bother opening a book. There are many reasons why movies are more affective than books, such as, less time, easier to understand, and enjoyable. In both Montag's and Mark's stories, their is a similarity. They both don't ever give in to their society. Although both leave a message, I believe Montag's story is stronger. Montag has to risk his life in way to be happy. In the other hand, Mark is risking all his time because he doesn't want to continue working in his job.

  35. I feel that movies are more important to the society. People dont wanna spend two weeks reading a book because once they get to the end they are sick of reading so much and board with the story. With movies people can see what is actually going on in the story, you get all the imformation you need to understand the story in a shorter amount of time and you can finish the movie before you get sick of it. movies are the modernday source of entertainment, its decently new to the world compared to books.
